What is Electric Picnic?

The weekend Ireland ends its summer on, twenty-two years running.

Electric Picnic fills the Stradbally Hall estate in County Laois with 80,000 people every late August - Ireland's biggest festival by a distance, and culturally closer to a national holiday than a gig. The 2026 edition runs Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August (early-entry campers arrive Thursday), with Lewis Capaldi's comeback headlining Friday, Gorillaz making their Stradbally debut Saturday, and Fontaines D.C. closing Sunday - plus CMAT, Skepta, Wolf Alice and the whole parallel world of the Salty Dog and the arts villages.

It is an all-camping weekend with its own folklore: the BYO campsite allowance (48 cans, no glass - genuinely unusual at this scale), the Sunday-night singalongs, and a crowd that buys the whole thing blind the September before. Which is exactly the problem this guide exists to solve.

Dates

28-30 August 2026, with Thursday early entry for pass holders - the classic Irish end-of-summer weekend.

Place

Stradbally Hall estate, Co. Laois - official coaches from Dublin's North Wall Quay and the regions; nearest rail at Portlaoise.

Scale

80,000 capacity, held at that level for 2026 - and sold out in under two hours, eleven months early.

Why people come back

It is Ireland's weekend: everyone camps, everyone sings, and the whole country seems to be in one field.

The main stage at Stradbally, name in lights. Ireland sells this out in under two hours now - eleven months before a single act is announced.

Why tickets are hard

Eighty thousand tickets, no lineup, gone before lunch.

The 2026 sale is already a year old: weekend camping tickets (245.50 to 325.50 EUR depending on loyalty tier) went on general sale on 3 September 2025 and sold out in under two hours - after the loyalty allocations and the Three presale had already vanished. There were no day tickets at all. The order caps make the maths stark: two tickets per person, with loyalty codes (for fans with one, two or three-plus previous Picnics on their Ticketmaster account) also capped at two.

What remains now is narrow but real: Ticketmaster's fan-to-fan resale - the only lawful route, with prices capped at what the seller originally paid - plus early-entry passes for existing ticket holders, official coaches, and the Pink Moon pre-pitched village for anyone who has a ticket but no tent. And one date matters more than any other: when the 2027 sale cycle starts in late August, the loyalty registration window is the single most valuable thing an Irish festival group can complete.

  • Two per person, everywhere: no hero buyer exists at EP - every member of the group is a buyer or the group is short.
  • The loyalty scheme rewards history: registration uses the Ticketmaster email that bought your previous Picnic tickets, tiered by how many you have attended.
  • Resale above face value is a criminal offence for this event - budget face value or nothing, and treat any premium listing as both illegal and void.
  • Tickets are digital with moving barcodes; wristbands are non-transferable once exchanged, and duplicated barcodes admit only the first scan.

The law and the age trap

Two rules that surprise people: the touting law, and thirteen-to-seventeen.

Electric Picnic is a designated event under Ireland's Sale of Tickets Act 2021, which makes reselling above face value - or buying beyond the ticket limit - unlawful, with fines up to 100,000 EUR or two years in prison. That is why the only resale that exists is Ticketmaster's own fan-to-fan exchange, where sellers list at their original price or lower and listings appear inside the normal purchase flow. For buyers the consequence is liberating: the resale watch is a patience game at face value, not an auction.

The age rules are the other surprise, and they are stricter than almost any festival in this library: children 12 and under come free (maximum two per adult, registered in advance), but 13-to-17-year-olds are refused entry entirely - even accompanied by a parent. A family group planning around a teenager needs to know this before anyone buys anything.

Know the rules and costs before you buy: face value is the legal ceiling, two tickets per person is the cap, teenagers between 13 and 17 cannot attend at all, and the loyalty window for the next sale opens around late August. Write those four down and the sold-out year has a plan.

Ticket rules

Named or transferable? We checked.

Named tickets

Digital Ticketmaster tickets with rotating (moving) barcodes; if you can't attend, tickets can only be passed on through official Ticketmaster resale at face value — no free private hand-off.

Each ticket is tied to a person's details at purchase, so passing one on later is restricted or costs a fee. The crew move: buy for each other, get everyone's details right the first time, and treat name changes as the exception, not the plan.

The group method

Everyone watches, everyone registers, nobody pays over face.

With a two-per-person cap and a face-value resale market, EP's group method is pure coverage. Every member runs their own Ticketmaster account and their own fan-to-fan watch - listings churn as August approaches and the campsite reality hits casual buyers. And for the 2027 cycle, the registration step is the whole game: each member registers for the loyalty scheme with the exact Ticketmaster email that holds their Picnic history, in the window that opens before the September sale.

Electric Picnic group buying method

  1. 1

    Map the loyalty history now

Each member finds the Ticketmaster email that bought their previous Picnics - the tiers reward three-plus and one-to-two past editions.

  2. 2

Run the resale watch as a rota

Fan-to-fan listings appear inside the normal Ticketmaster flow at face value or lower. Every member watches with their own account.

  3. 3

    Set face-value-only ceilings

The law caps resale at original price - so the ceiling conversation is short, and any premium listing is a refusal, not a negotiation.

  4. 4

Treat late August as sale season

Registration windows, presales and the two-hour general sale all land within weeks - diary them the moment they publish.

A calm Picnic plan has one place for the real answers: who still needs tickets this year, everyone's face-value-only ceiling, which Ticketmaster email holds each person's loyalty history, the under-12 registrations for family groups, and who books the North Wall coach seats before they go.

This cycle and next

Watch the resale now; win the loyalty window in August.

The 2027 template is written in the 2026 cycle: loyalty registration closing mid-August, codes emailed within days, the Three presale, then general sale in the first days of September with instalment plans (deposit plus two payments through spring). A group that treats late August as sale season - registrations done, budgets agreed, every member ready to buy their two - walks into the two-hour sale with the best odds Ireland allows.

At the Picnic, the win is a registration most groups never make.

With two per person and a face-value market, the only edges that exist are the loyalty window and full-group coverage of the sale - both free, both official, both decided in August. That is the entire trick.

A sea of tents under a bright sky at the Electric Picnic campsite
The Stradbally campsite, seen here in the festival's early years - the shape of the weekend has not changed: everyone camps, and everyone plans the cans allowance.

Why it matters

Electric Picnic is easier to love when the admin is already done.

The Picnic memories that matter are the campsite breakfast, the act you stumbled into at the Salty Dog, and the Sunday night when the whole field sings. Getting a group there is a year-long calendar - loyalty windows, a two-hour sale, a face-value resale watch - and every piece of it rewards writing things down.

None of this is touting or gaming anything - Irish law has made sure of that better than any festival terms could. The difference is a group that registered on time, watched the official exchange, and never needed to look anywhere else.

Where TicketSquad helps

TicketSquad keeps the Picnic calendar and the coverage in one place.

TicketSquad gives a Picnic squad one home for the whole cycle: who needs tickets and at what face-value ceiling, whose Ticketmaster email carries which loyalty tier, who watches the fan-to-fan exchange, under-12 registrations, coach bookings and the instalment dates that keep a September purchase painless.

For a festival with a two-per-person cap, organisation is not an advantage - it is the only strategy that exists. Set the plan up once and both the resale watch and the next two-hour sale become routine.

This is one way we help

The event page becomes the plan, not just the place you store names.

Once the ticket method is clear, the next question is everything around it: where the official links are, what kind of ticket or package the squad is aiming for, what the lineup status is, how people get there, where they sleep, and what they should know before they arrive. TicketSquad keeps that event knowledge beside the data your squad needs to submit.
